Olympic Swimmer Duncan Scott visits Musselburgh Sports Centre

Olympic Swimmer, Duncan Scott’s visit to Musselburgh Sports Centre

Wow! What an afternoon was had at Musselburgh Sports Centre on Wednesday 5th February.

Over 70 youngsters from enjoyleisure’s Get in the Swim lesson programme were treated to a special visit from Scottish Swimming’s Learn to Swim Ambassador and double Olympic Silver Medallist Duncan Scott last week.   His visit was part of the celebrations following enjoyleisure’s success at the Scottish Swimming Awards in November 2019, when East Lothian’s Leisure Trust was awarded Scottish Water’s Learn to Swim Provider of the Year.

Taking precious time out from studying at University and a gruelling training schedule as he prepares for another year at the Olympics this summer, Duncan was on hand to assist in the delivery of Musselburgh’s swimming lesson programme as well as provide demonstrations of the key strokes.

He was even challenged to a race by some of the younger children in level 1A.  A willing competitor he took to his starting position to swim 5metres across the pool.   The race was won by 4 year old Molleigh .. who was delighted, grinning “he couldn’t win because he was slow! Too slow! … I was the fastest!”

The children were given the opportunity to ask Duncan questions about his love of swimming and training schedule.  They were amazed to hear that he trains twice a day, usually 10 times a week – only having a rest day on Sunday.  They wanted to know how fast he could go, and how he managed to get so fast, to which he replied by training lots and lots and lots!

Duncan said "The Scottish Water Learn to Swim Provider of the Year Award really highlights the positive work enjoyleisure are doing in creating more confident, competent and well-rounded swimmers. It’s fantastic to see how many children are developing under the framework."

Karen Ferguson, enjoyleisure’s Swimming Development Manager spoke of her delight at Duncan's visit to the facility. "It’s great to have Duncan here interacting with the kids. It’s really important for us to use someone as a role model and this could be really inspiring for some of the children. The teachers were equally excited!"
