9 Feb 2021 Gymnastics at Home

9th February 2021

Enjoy Gymnastics at Home!

It’s February half term!  Hurray!  No home schooling! Hurray!  And the kids are .. at home .. just like last week .. and the week before!

Keeping kids active and entertained while indoors can be exhausting … we know!   However enjoyleisure has some suggestions to help kids break up the boredom, practice their skills and enjoy being active at home.   And better yet, it’s only a click away!

Starting at 12noon on Tuesday 9th February, enjoyleisure will be relaunching its “Gymnastics at Home” videos via Facebook.   Filmed last summer by enjoy Gymnastics Development Officer Catriona Morton, the “Gymnastics at Home” videos provide suggestions for children aged 5+ to participate in a range of fundamental activities to maintain their skills, keep their activity levels up and enjoy gymnastics in their own home.

The videos encourage children to begin with a warm up, before providing examples of core gymnastics skills and drills to practice at home to improve balance, posture, flexibility and movement.   Each video covers a different skill including, stretching, basic shapes and balances, and more specialised techniques including rolling, cartwheels and handstands and splits.

The videos will be posted onto Facebook daily over the next 8 days, however the complete box set (8 episodes) is available to view under the “Gymnastics at Home” playlist via and on our gymnastics pages here.

Maintaining activity levels while staying at home is important for us all, but especially for children.  Ideally children and young people should aim for at least 60minutes of activity every day across the week.  Incorporating indoor ‘playground’ games, creating dance routines, stretching, balancing, rolling, and general movement is not only important for their physical health, but their mental wellbeing too.  Some is good, but more is better!

enjoy Gymnastics Development Officer Catriona Morton comments,

“We’re disappointed that the Sports Centres are required to remain closed at present, especially as we were so looking forward to launching our brand new gymnastics membership scheme in January.  However as the Health, Wellbeing and Charitable Leisure Trust for East Lothian, enjoyleisure is committed to promoting active and healthy opportunities for the community.  These videos provide just a taster of what the enjoy gymnastics programme has to offer, and we hope children will be able to benefit from them at home until we can resume classes in the Sports Centres once again.”

The enjoy gymnastics membership scheme provides opportunities for children from just 9 weeks old to enjoy participating in weekly gymnastics classes, scheduled over 40 weeks of the year.  Payable by direct debit, the membership scheme guarantees your child’s space within the programme, with no need to rebook and smooth transitions through the programme as your child develops.

The membership scheme starts with Baby Gym, suitable from 9 weeks old.  This class incorporates quality time for parents and their babies in spend time together in a social atmosphere to development movement, cruising and interaction with other children.   From 18months, infants then move to Tumble Bugs developing coordination and balance skills.  From 3 years they can then progress to Gym Monkeys strengthening their confidence and abilities.

From age 5, children progress into the enjoyGymnastics framework, where they learn fundamental gymnastics skills against developmental level criteria, on a number of pieces of recognisable apparatus.

All of enjoy’s gymnastics programme classes have been adapted to meet social distancing guidelines, including reduced class sizes, enhanced cleaning protocols and governing body guidelines.

Although a start date for the gymnastics programme is still to be confirmed in line with Sports Centre reopening, enjoyleisure are currently accepting enquiries from new participants looking to join the programme.  Gymnastics classes are available in North Berwick, Haddington, Tranent and Musselburgh.
